These 5 learned the hard way: Money no guarantee of success in Illinois elections

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner denies ever pledging to spend $50 million of his own money to fund his campaign, but there is no denying that he could do it if he wanted. His $1 million donation to his own campaign this week brings his total to $6 million — breaking the record for self-funding in a gubernatorial campaign (previously held by Ron Gidwitz at $5.3 million).

Illinois has never seen a candidate with wealth on Rauner’s scale, but wealthy candidates in general have struggled in recent years. Here are some examples. (Click image and use magnifying glass cursor to enlarge.)
