Reactions vary on Quinn's lawmaker pay suspension

Gov. Pat Quinn on Wednesday suspended paychecks for Illinois lawmakers until they pass a pension reform bill he can sign into law.

In doing so, Quinn made good on his threat of “consequences” if a special pension committee failed to meet his July 9 deadline for crafting a pension deal.

It was a bold and aggressive move by Quinn, who lately has been criticized for having neither of qualities.

Reaction to Quinn’s move was varied, some seeing it as politically astute, some seeing it as a stunt. (And Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka is looking into whether it’s even legal.)
