Do you know how much your teachers earn? Illinois’ highest, lowest average salaries

Chart: Average teacher salaries in each district

During the 2015-16 academic year, the average annual salary of the more than 127,000 full-time public school teachers in Illinois was $63,450, according to employment data from the State Board of Education.

But depending on the type of district, its location, and the level of education and years of experience among teachers, average salaries can vary significantly across districts, from more than $110,000 to as low as $26,000.

For example, teachers in Maine Township HSD 207 earn the highest average salary in the state at about $111,000, while their counterparts in Farrington CCSD 99 take home the lowest at little more than $26,000 a year.

Comparing these two districts, however, can be misleading, especially when you look at the size of each one.

Headquartered in Park Ridge, Maine Township serves nearly 6,400 students and employs some 400 full-time teachers. Farrington, an elementary district in the tiny southern Illinois town of Bluford, has just 75 students enrolled and seven teachers.

Also evident here are two other key factors in determining teacher pay: cost of living and the wealth of a district.

Located 10 miles to the west of Bluford is Mount Vernon, where the cost of living index is 36 percent lower than in Park Ridge. In other words, you would need to earn $31,792 in Mount Vernon compared to $50,000 in Park Ridge to maintain the same standard of living.

As for district finances, Farrington’s total revenue last school year was $560,000, with 54 percent of funding coming from the state and 35 percent from local sources, such as property taxes. In Maine Township, local funding accounted for 92 percent of the district’s $130 million in total revenue, while only 6 percent came from the state.

Those are some of the things you’ll want to keep in mind when looking at this list of districts with the highest- and lowest-average teacher salaries.

The salary figures listed below come from the board of education’s Employment Information System (EIS), a constantly evolving database that is updated daily with new data submitted by districts, according to the board of education.

Information on the number of teachers and students in a district, as well as retention rates, student-teacher ratios and education levels come from Illinois Report Card, which presents a snapshot in time of each district.

That’s one of the reasons why salary data from EIS and Illinois Report Card might differ. Another is because our analysis includes position codes for all full-time equivalent teachers in a district, such as bilingual and special education teachers.

Note: Only school districts are included in the following lists. A sortable spreadsheet with average base salaries in each district can be found at the bottom of this post.
