Only in Illinois: Rauner’s Chicago State action a sign of hope for Illinois colleges

A year ago, Gov. Bruce Rauner sharply criticized the financially and academically struggling Chicago State University as a “failed institution” and suggested the state pull all its funding and give it to students so they could go somewhere else.

This week, though, Rauner came to the school’s rescue, appointing Paul Vallas to its board of trustees and putting the former Chicago Public Schools CEO (and former Democratic candidate for governor and lieutenant governor) in charge of turning Chicago State around.
