Rep. Mitchell introduces bill to end cash bond in Illinois

Tyler Smith lost both of his jobs and nearly the apartment he shares with his mother after spending more than eight months under house arrest because he didn’t have the $2,500 to post his bond.

“For me, the bond system is not about justice, it’s about money,” said Smith, who also was forced to drop out of school. “Under the bond system, whether or not you’re incarcerated depends on one thing: How much money you have in your account or in your wallet.”
