Chicago Public Schools sues state over ‘discriminatory’ school funding

Chicago Public Schools along with five minority families with children in the district filed suit against the state Tuesday, alleging the way Illinois funds schools is illegal because it violates the civil rights of African-American and Latino students.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Cook County Circuit Court and names Gov. Bruce Rauner, Comptroller Susana Mendoza, Superintendent Tony Smith, the Illinois State Board of Education and its chairman Rev. James Meeks as the defendants, accuses the state of having “separate and unequal” education funding systems.
