Infographic: Union membership in Illinois falls to new low

The number of Illinois workers who were members of labor unions in 2016 fell to its lowest level since the federal government began tracking membership more than 30 years ago.

An analysis of the latest Current Population Survey data shows union membership in the state’s private and public sectors decreased by 34,587 people between 2015 and 2016, from 846,984 to 812,397 members.

These losses overwhelmingly came from the public sector, where union membership declined by slightly more than 50,000 as employment in the public sector decreased by 49,433, or 6.9 percent, implying that nearly all of the government jobs lost were in…
