Unemployment rate holds steady, 2015-16 job growth revised upward

Revised jobs numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Thursday show Illinois gained 2,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in December, rather than the initial estimate of 16,700 in losses.

The annual benchmarked revisions also revised up the number of jobs created in December 2015 to 28,200. As a result, total job gains in 2016 fell to 18,900 from the preliminary estimate of 28,400 reported on Jan. 20, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Jeff Mays, the department’s director, said in a news release the upward revisions were expected but still disappointing considering the state remains 31,900 jobs short…
