Policy capping overtime for DHS home care workers clears committee

A legislative oversight committee has approved a new rule that would limit overtime hours for home caregivers who serve people with disabilities.

The bipartisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules voted along party lines Tuesday, resulting in a 6-6 deadlocked vote and another failed attempt to block the implementation of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed overtime policy.

Under the new policy, workers in the Illinois Department of Humans Services’ Home Services Program will be limited to 45 hours of overtime per week beginning Aug. 1.
