Chicago metro area accounts for 76% of job gains in January

The Chicago metro area in January remained one of the few parts of the state experiencing significant job growth, according to preliminary data released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Statewide, employers added 11,300 nonfarm jobs in January, with just five of the state’s 14 metro areas seeing an increase in employment when compared to a year ago.

About 20,400 jobs were gained in those five metros, though the Chicago-Naperville-Arlington Heights area accounted for 76 percent of those new jobs.

Additionally, the Chicago metro area was just one of three that had an over-the-year decline in its unemployment rate, which fell 0.7 percentage points…
