McConchie proposes giving comptroller authority to delay lawmaker pay

Following a Cook County judge’s ruling Thursday that state lawmakers must be paid despite there being no budget, one Republican senator has proposed a measure that would give the comptroller’s office the authority to delay issuing paychecks to legislators if there’s not enough funds to pay other obligations.

State Sen. Dan McConchie of Hawthorn Woods filed an amendment to SB 989 immediately after a judge sided with six Democratic lawmakers and ordered Comptroller Susana Mendoza to prioritize legislative salaries over payments to social service providers and other vendors owed money by the state.
