Don’t allow Illinoisans to grow their own marijuana, Colorado official advises

In what was the first in a series of hearings Wednesday on a proposal to legalize marijuana for recreational use, a Colorado official advised Illinois lawmakers against allowing residents to grow their own plants, acknowledging some safety challenges.

State Sen. Heather Steans and state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, both Chicago Democrats who are sponsors of legislation (SB 316 and HB 2553) that would allow adults 21 and older to possess up to 28 grams of cannabis purchased from regulated and licensed facilities, heard from a Colorado state official tasked with regulating and enforcing the recreational marijuana industry.
