U.S. News ranks the 30 best hospitals in Illinois

Aug 09, 2017

U.S. News & World Report is out with its annual ranking of the nation’s best hospitals, and 30 hospitals in Illinois made the cut this year.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago once again was rated the No. 1 hospital in the state. It also took the No. 13 spot on the magazine’s “Honor Roll” list, which spotlights the 20 highest-scoring hospitals in the country.

The analysis ranks hospitals based on their performance across dozens of clinical specialties, procedures and medical conditions, from cancer and cardiology to hip and knee replacements. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., took the top spot in this year’s ranking.

More from U.S. News on its methodology:

There are 16 specialty areas. In 12, ranking is determined mostly by data: cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, ear, nose & throat, gastroenterology & GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.

In the remaining four specialties (ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation and rheumatology), ranking is determined entirely by reputation, based on responses from three years of surveys of physician specialists.
